Andriy Shutenko – Metal Sculptor
By Mountain’s Edge Culture and Arts
Sparks fly when sculptor Andriy Shutenko bends metal into large-as-life art. Originally from Ukraine, Andriy arrived in Canada with his family in 2022, bringing with him over 15 years of experience in architectural design and public art. Today, his striking metal sculptures are catching the eyes—and imaginations—of Albertans.
Andriy’s work blends the precision of architecture with the spirit of sculpture. Drawing on his background in fabrication and design, including collaborations with leading European firms, he creates large-scale, geometric sculptures of Canadian wildlife—moose, wolves, bears, eagles, and more—each formed from shaped panels of steel and aluminum, welded with care and precision. His current series, Wildlife of Canada, is both a tribute to his new home and a showcase of his sculptural prowess.
Using triangles, rhombuses, and trapezoids, Andriy assembles his creations like a puzzle in metal—each one full of angles, energy, and movement. Some sculptures are left raw to age gracefully in the elements; others are intended to be painted in vivid patterns to highlight their bold geometry.
There's also a cultural layer to Andriy’s work. He weaves his Ukrainian heritage into his designs, incorporating traditional folk art styles like Petrykivka and Samchykivka into the detailing or color palette. It’s a way of honouring where he comes from while embracing where he is.
“I want people to feel something when they see my work. To be inspired, to pause, to wonder. In a world full of screens, real, tangible art still has power.”
